Ever since the game’s official reveal, both EA and DICE have been talking at length about what Battlefield V will not have. The game will be ditching the Battlefield premium pass seen with previous battlefield games, and won’t be utilizing the much-maligned loot box as a means of post launch monetization either. The absence of paid DLC and loot boxes is reassuring, but not exactly a reason to get excited for Battlefield V. New content, on the other hand, absolutely is; DICE knows this of course and has given fans another concrete reason to look forward to the game: a new multiplayer mode known as “Airborne.”

The announcement came earlier today via the official Twitter account for Battlefield V. In Airborne, players are divided into attacking and defending teams. The attacking team will parachute behind enemy lines and do their best to knock out the defending team’s artillery. The defending team’s job is pretty self explanatory: dig in and drive back the enemy paratroopers. Team sizes aren’t known yet, but it seems they’ll be large enough for teams to be sub-divided into individual squads. The foundation of this mode appears to be the standard siege game type, but with an extra twist or two to spice it up. Hopefully, DICE will reveal more about what those twists could be during E3 next month.

Airborne might be the first new mode coming to Battlefield V, but it’s not the only one that’s been confirmed so far. DICE has already announced that Battlefield V will have an improved Conquest mode, and that fans will have plenty of opportunities to see the game in action before its launch on October 19. Battlefield games are always a big event in gaming, and it looks like Battlefield V is well on its way to becoming one of the biggest. Whether or not it ends up being a positive event depends entirely on how EA and DICE handle it. Their recent track record hasn’t been so great, so it might be best to err on the side of caution with this one.

Battlefield V will release on October 19 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
