Daniel Berlin, the design director at Battlefield V , offered the battle royale mode tidbits during an interview with Geoff Keighley as part of Keighley’s E3 2018 livestream coverage. During the stream, Berlin confirmed that Battlefield V battle royale will build upon many of the things that fans already enjoy about the Battlefield series. This includes team play and squad play as well as vehicles and destructive environments, though Berlin didn’t offer any specifics on exactly how much of the battle royale map (or maps as the case may be) will be destructible.

From Berlin’s brief description of the gameplay features, it does sound as though Battlefield V battle royale will offer some big differences over rival battle royale titles. PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds offers a smattering of different vehicles while Fortnite Battle Royale has only dipped its toes into the vehicular waters, recently introducing a rideable shopping cart. But these games pale in comparison to Battlefield’s vehicular combat.

In Battlefield 1, players put together epic videos of them getting kills by leaping out of planes and crashing them into opponents, or standing on planes and throwing explosives at enemies beneath them. While it’s unclear exactly how vehicles may be implemented in Battlefield V battle royale, there is a huge amount of potential there.

Unfortunately, though, fans of the shooter franchise will have to wait until after Battlefield V launches in order to play the battle royale mode for themselves. DICE had previously confirmed that battle royale would be added as a post-launch update; a point which Berlin reiterated during the interview with Keighley. Berlin suggested that by releasing the game mode after launch, it would give fans enough time to properly enjoy and appreciated the story and traditional multiplayer modes. Many will also note that it gives DICE time to iron out any kinks that come up during the launch window and address player feedback. Hopefully, the extra waiting time for the mode will pay off.

Battlefield V is out October 19 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
