A Modern Setting And A Focus On Rush
After the struggles of Battlefield 5, seeing the franchise return to the modern era of warfare would be a welcome change of pace. A modern Battlefield game has nor released since Battlefield: Hardline back in 2015, with the last modern DICE game coming two years prior via Battlefield 4. The setting simply works well for the Battlefield brand, as trademark features like destruction are best shown via modern buildings and map layouts. This also allows for more weapon variety, adding to the strength of a modern setting. With some of the best Battlefield games being modern, such as Battlefield 3 and the Bad Company series, coming back to this time period is a must.
Fortunately, Battlefield leakers have agreed upon a modern setting being utilized, with some even hyping up the possibilities of World War 3. If this does happen, seeing several sides involved in the conflict would be a great change. With Russia consistently used as the villain, getting something different in a military shooter would be great. Instead of using this tired trope, DICE has the chance to do something different, with a global conflict truly feeling like it is taking place throughout the world — and with many different militaries involved. As such, getting a different “villain” is needed, especially with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 already featuring an evil Russia in its version of a third World War.
Outside of a modern setting with a fresh enemy, the rumors about Battlefield 6’s Battlefield 3 inspirations proving true would be great to see. The 2011 game featured incredible map design, with highlights like Operation Metro and Damavand Peak being remembered fondly nearly a decade later. These maps were assisted by a perfectly designed version of the Rush game mode, as the objectives allowed players to push through different portions of a massive map. Constantly making maps feel fresh, Rush was a highlight, though recent Battlefield releases have seen the mode taking a backseat to Conquest and Operations. Hopefully it becomes a focus once again, with other Battlefield 3 features like Battlelog coming back as well.
Improved Destruction And A Next-Gen Release
If the next Battlefield game truly wants to put the series back on the map, its Battlefield 6’s destruction needs to deliver. Consistently marketed as one of the series’ defining features, destruction has become more of an afterthought in recent releases. While Battlefield 1 and Battlefield 5 had their moments, like buildings being broken down and zeppelins being destroyed, there was less meaningful destruction than what was seen in past games. With large plains and empty deserts serving as recent maps, this is understandable, though the modern cities and landmarks could help make destruction less of a gimmick.
Becoming a defining feature like Battlefield 4’s levelution, only hopefully a bit less scripted, incredible destruction could rejuvenate the Battlefield franchise. Fortunately, this has been one of the features that is getting consistent hype from leakers, as the game will apparently feature fully destructible cities. Beyond this, natural disasters like tornados, monsoons, and volcanic eruptions will supposedly feature, all of which should wreak havoc in a match. While walls and buildings will surely still be able to get destroyed, seeing large-scale destruction again should prove fun as well.
Finally, the rumors of a next-gen only release for Battlefield 6 could be a huge positive. While it would limit sales and cut off those without a next-gen console, the move to PS5 and Xbox Series X could allow DICE to take full advantage of the next-gen platforms. Battlefield could continue to be a series that sports cutting edge graphics, with any destruction that does take place serving as a visual spectacle for players. Guns, character models, and maps could all look better, with the power of the PS5 and Xbox Series X allowing the game to handle a raised player count and bigger maps. Further, with Battlefield 4’s cross-gen launch being disastrous, having the game focus on PC and next-gen would likely ensure a smoother release.

A Battle Royale… Or Something Different
For many, the concept of a Battlefield 6 battle royale mode is tantalizing. Streamers like Dr Disrespect have shared excitement over such a mode, with many interested in seeing how DICE would balance out Battlefield’s vehicles inside such a competitive play space. Further, with all of Battlefield 6’s maps rumored to be battle-royale sized, it would be possible for DICE to turn all of its maps into battle royale arenas — instantly giving the mode more map variety than any other battle royale on the market.
At the same time time, it would be just as interesting to see Battlefield 6 do something original. With the genre already being overpopulated and filled with different types of battle royale titles, there is a good chance that Battlefield 6’s battle royale offering would be overshadowed. With free-to-play juggernauts like Call of Duty: Warzone and Fortnite not going away anytime soon, skipping a battle royale mode in favor of something entirely fresh would be wise. While the sky is the limit when it comes to options, one of the most interesting would be a dino mode.
Originally teased for Battlefield 3, the mode was a tongue-in-cheek reference to Call of Duty’s Zombies mode. Since then, DICE has included consistent references to dinosaurs in its games, from Megalodon sharks jumping out of water to T-Rex roars heard in jungles. Battlefield 5’s final easter egg even sees players encounter Pterodactyls, with fans theorizing about the mode’s existence with every release. Seeing dino mode finally become a reality with Battlefield 6 would be incredible, as it could give DICE a unique co-op offering that can compete with Call of Duty Zombies. While some would prefer a more serious battle royale mode, including something a bit more lighthearted could be a great way to get new players intrigued.
Battlefield 6 is in development for unspecified platforms.
