While DICE has been making rapid changes through three large Battlefield 2042 updates, there are still a number of issues with the game which continues to frustrate the community. One such issue is with Battlefield Portal, which many would agree is the game’s major brightspot as it not only brings back legacy content, but allows players to make their own custom games and rulesets. Unfortunately, the first few days at launch saw the rise of XP farming, pushing DICE to crack down on this behavior by disabling XP gain entirely while playing that mode.

While fans have been enjoying Battlefield Portal, not being able to progress in a legitimate way has continued to undermine the mode, leaving players wondering when things would return to normal. While DICE has yet to officially comment, fans may have gotten a hint thanks to Justin Wiebe, Senior Design Director at Ripple Effect Studios. Responding to fans on Twitter, Wiebe was asked about a specific timeframe for XP being restored into Portal. While Wiebe didn’t commit to a hard date, he did confirm that a meeting was recently held regarding the issue and if everything goes well, it could return before the start of the coming weekend.
He then went on to address a few more Portal related questions, confirming that weapon and mastery progression remains locked to Featured Experiences only in Portal for the time being. Part of the struggle the team seems to be wrestling with is finding a balance to allow for progress, but prevent players from finding a way to exploit and undermine the system. In addition, while the team is prioritizing fixing major bugs, they also understand the need for new content considering that Battlefield 2042 is a live service game. Finding a balance there as well, remains a priority at Ripple Effect.
In addition to the return of XP Progression inside of Portal, DICE continues to make much needed adjustments to the core of Battlefield 2042. While there’s still plenty left to do and fix, the third update launches today for the online shooter. The patch features a massive amount of fixes including improvements to matchmaking, specialist abilities, UI, and more. Many map issues have been fixed, Breakthrough has seen quality of life improvements, and the game has also added Weekly Missions and the Rush game type to 2042 maps in Portal.
Battlefield 2042 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
