Battle royale games are all the rage right now, so it’s no surprise that developers are jumping on that bandwagon in all sorts of ways. Though games like PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds or Fortnite may be the first to come to mind when thinking of battle royales, the genre has spread massively in recent years, even reaching unexpected places such as Nintendo’s Super Mario franchise and Tetris. For these reasons, many expected Battlefield 2042 to have a battle royale mode. DICE has frequently denied that this would be the case, and that doesn’t seem to be changing.

To be clear, Hazard Zone is not a battle royale mode. Players will group up in squads to compete against other squads, but the single death trademark of the battle royale genre will likely not be present. The official Battlefield 2042 website simply says “Squad up and drop down into the Hazard Zone - an all-new, high-stakes multiplayer experience.” More information will be revealed on October 14.

Now players can watch a short, 32 second trailer hyping fans up for the reveal of what Hazard Zone actually is. In terms of new information, there certainly isn’t much to be found int his half a minute, but it does reinforce the idea that every squad is for itself. This means that multiple squads won’t be teaming up with each other, even if the player count is high in this Battlefield 2042 game mode. Fans wanting to know more will need to tune in on October 14th at 9 AM MST.

For Battlefield 2042 to put this much build-up into the reveal of a new game mode means that DICE must be excited about it. Hopefully, it will be more successful than the battle royale mode from Battlefield 5, as Firestorm was infamous for its departure from the series’ trademark style. With the reveal coming in just a few days and the game’s full release just around the corner, fans won’t have to wait long.

Battlefield 2042 releases on November 19th for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
